Pros and Cons of Wearing Hair Extensions

Many women love to wear hair extensions for all the right reasons. They promise a sense of magical transformation. However, like all other things, wearing hair extensions has its pros and cons. But before we get into the benefits and disadvantages of wearing one, let’s talk about what hair extensions are.  

What Are Hair Extensions?

Like diamonds, hair extensions are a girl’s best friend. Women use hair extensions to add length and volume to their hair. They can either be made from natural or synthetic materials. Virgin and natural hair extensions are among the most expensive extensions. They are best known for their quality and versatility.

However, there are also different kinds of synthetic hair extensions. These are great alternatives, especially if you’re on a budget. But unlike natural hair extensions, they’re not ideal for heat styling. Both kinds work well depending on how you use and style them.  

Types of Hair Extensions and Their Pros and Cons

By now, you’ve realised that hair extensions can be made using different types of materials. Now, it’s time to know that there are also a lot of types of hair extensions. Let’s discuss each type:

Tape-In Hair Extensions

These hair extensions are particularly popular because they can be put on effortlessly in just a couple of minutes. They come in wefts that are around 1.5 inches wide and from 17 inches to 26 inches in length. Each weft has double- or single-sided polyurethane tape tabs to securely place into its desired position.

Pros:

• They require no heat or tools.
• They prevent hair damage since you don’t need heat and chemical for the application process.
• The hair extensions may be used multiple times.

Cons:  

• Since you need an adhesive to tape and secure the extensions, it takes at least 24 to 48 hours for the curing process.
• When used, you cannot immediately wash your hair or perform activities that can lead to sweating.
• Styling your hair in a top bun or tying it up may be quite uncomfortable if not positioned correctly.

Micro Ring Hair Extensions

Have you seen hairstylists applying small bundles of hair that come with rings? If you did, then you’ve already seen micro ring extensions. They are secured by a metal bead and typically takes four to five hours to attach.

What’s great about these extensions is that they last relatively longer than the tape-in type. You can wear it without running into any hair problems for two to three months.

Pros:

• Like tape-in extensions, they don’t require heat to attach to the natural hair.
• You can easily adjust the hair extensions by sliding them up and down.
• They blend seamlessly with your natural hair.

Cons:  

• They’re not great for people with fine or short hair.
• They might cause discomfort and strain on your scalp.
• The hair extensions can damage your hair if they are not properly removed by a professional.

Clip-In Hair Extensions

If you want longer hair within minutes, clip-in hair extensions work wonders. They come in a weft of hair with clips attached to them. You don’t need to be a hairstylist to even attach them to someone else’s hair. All you need to do is clip them on the roots; and voila, beautiful luscious hair in just a matter of seconds!

Pros:

• Clip-in hair extensions are incredibly easy to apply.
• You can change your hairstyle whenever you want since you can put them on and remove them anytime.
• They’re the most versatile to style; so, whether you want a curl or a ponytail, the choice is yours to make.

Cons:

• They’re not great for extended periods of use because the clips might strain and break your hair.
• They must be removed before going to bed, which can be quite a hassle for some.
• Most clip-in hair extensions are made with low-quality materials, so finding one that looks natural and blends seamlessly with your hair can be tricky.

Hot Fusion Hair Extensions

Unlike most types of hair extensions, hot fusion hair extensions should be applied and attached by a professional. Since it takes more or less six to eight hours to attach, an experienced hairstylist will ensure to keep your hair beautiful and protected against heat damage.

Pros:  

• With proper maintenance, they can stay and look great for six to eight months.
• You can’t really notice where the extensions have been attached because the extensions perfectly blend with your natural hair.

Cons:  

• It takes time to complete the whole attachment process, which can be tiresome and overwhelming.
• They’re not reusable or easily adjustable.
• You may suffer from headache and discomfort for a couple of days after the attachment session.

Cold Fusion Hair Extensions

Similar to the hot fusion method, cold fusion hair extensions require a lot of work. You need a specific tool to attach these extensions, so it’s best to leave the task to the professionals.

Pros:  

• They can be attached close to the roots, making them blend well with anyone’s natural hair.
• They’re perfect for individuals with fine hair.
• Hair damage is less likely to be an issue since heat is not involved.

Cons:  

• They take six to eight hours to put in.
• They are also not reusable.
• Headache or irritation can happen a few days after application.
