Wig Care & Maintenance: Keep Your Wig Looking Beautiful

Care and maintenance tips for your quality wig, from the experts at Blossom.

At Blossom Hair, Body, Face & Wig Boutique, we understand that your wig is more than just hair, it’s a reflection of your identity and confidence. Whether you’re wearing a wig due to medical hair loss, alopecia, or personal style preferences, proper care is essential to maintain its beauty and longevity. This guide provides expert tips on caring for both human hair and synthetic wigs, ensuring they remain vibrant and comfortable.

Understanding Your Wig Type

Medical wigs are more than just a replacement for lost hair — they’re designed to support people through some of life’s most vulnerable moments.

These high-quality wigs are made specifically for those experiencing hair loss due to:

  • Chemotherapy or radiation treatment

  • Alopecia (including alopecia areata or totalis)

  • Autoimmune conditions or hormonal changes

  • Trichotillomania or other medical causes

Unlike costume wigs or fashion wigs, medical wigs are made for comfort, breathability, and realism. They’re designed to be worn for long periods and to feel as natural as possible — both in appearance and on your scalp.

Why they matter:

  • Gentle on sensitive skin: Medical wigs are lightweight and often lined with soft materials to avoid irritation.

  • Secure fit: They’re built to stay comfortably in place, even during movement or changes in body temperature.

  • Designed for confidence: Realistic fibres, natural hairlines, and breathable cap constructions help restore the look and feel of your own hair.

These wigs aren’t about covering up — they’re about helping you feel like you again.

How to wash your wig

Both synthetic and human hair wigs benefit from a regular gentle wash to remove product buildup, sweat, and oils.

Human hair wigs

  • Wash every 7–10 wears using sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner.

  • Rinse gently and let it air dry on a wig stand — avoid wringing or rubbing.

Synthetic wigs

  • Wash every 10–15 wears with wig-specific shampoo and conditioner.

  • Gently blot with a towel and allow to air dry.

Never brush a wet wig — always wait until it’s completely dry before styling.
Brushing a wig while it’s wet can stretch and damage the fibres, leading to breakage, frizz, or unwanted shedding. Just like natural hair, wet strands are more fragile and prone to stress — but wig fibres (especially synthetic ones) are even more delicate. Allowing your wig to air dry on a stand not only helps preserve its shape and style but also protects the cap construction and keeps the strands smooth and intact. Once dry, use a wide-tooth comb or a wig-friendly brush to gently detangle from the ends upward.

Styling tips for human hair and synthetic wigs

Human hair wigs offer the most versatility when it comes to styling. You can straighten, curl, or blow-dry them using low heat settings — just as you would with natural hair. Always use a heat protectant spray made for wigs, and avoid applying direct heat near the wig cap to maintain its integrity. This flexibility allows you to change your look more often, whether you’re going for sleek and smooth or soft waves.

Synthetic wigs, on the other hand, are typically pre-styled and designed to hold their shape. Most synthetic fibres are not heat-friendly, so using curling wands or straighteners can cause irreversible damage — unless your wig is specifically labelled as heat-resistant. In those cases, still keep the temperature low and style carefully. To freshen the look, use a wig-specific detangling spray or light mist of water, and reshape with your fingers.

General styling advice:
Stick to wig-friendly products such as lightweight sprays or styling mists designed for synthetic or human hair wigs. Avoid heavy oils, mousses, or styling creams, as they can cause build-up, weigh the hair down, or make fibres clump and tangle — especially in synthetic wigs. Always use wide-tooth combs or wig brushes, and never style a wig while it’s wet.

Wig deep care for softness and longevity

Just like natural hair, wigs benefit from regular deep conditioning to stay soft, manageable, and long-lasting.

For human hair wigs:
Use a high quality leave in conditioner or moisturising serum made specifically for wigs after each wash to help keep the fibres nourished. Once a month, apply a deep conditioning treatment. Especially if you’re using heat or styling tools regularly. This helps restore moisture, reduce dryness, and prevent the hair from becoming brittle or dull. Make sure to rinse thoroughly and dry completely before styling again.

For synthetic wigs:
While synthetic wigs don’t absorb conditioner the same way human hair does, you can still use a specially formulated synthetic wig conditioner or fibre spray to reduce static, improve manageability, and give your wig a soft, fresh feel.

Important tip:
Avoid supermarket shampoos, conditioners, or treatments, they often contain sulphates, alcohols, or other harsh ingredients that can damage delicate wig fibres or break down the adhesives and stitching in the wig cap. Always choose salon quality or wig specific care products to keep your wig looking and feeling its best.
